why was rachel weisz not in the mummy 3
Maria Bello is joining the cast of The Mummy 3, but she won t be playing a new character. Instead, she ll replace Rachel Weisz as Evelyn O Connell. After a lot of discussion, Weisz declined to be in the film. Our sources say it s because the script sucks and even Brendan Fraser only agreed to do it because they backed up a Brinks truck and unloaded it on his front porch. Universal of course, says it s for less depressing reasons. If Weisz really left because the script is so bad, you re probably wondering why Maria Bello would do it. After all, she has a history of sticking with smaller, artsy projects like
The Cooler or A History of Violence. Personally, I think she just felt ready for a big paycheck. Every actress needs at least one blockbuster payment to fill her bank account and for her this is it. Rachel Weisz already has her blockbuster money, and didn t need it. But that s just my wild guess. Maybe the script is brilliant and Bello loves it.
Who knows. This third Mummy film is directed by Rob Cohen, whose last movie was the flop Stealth. Before that, he directed the pretty good Vin Diesel action movie xXx. Luckily, he had very little to do with the terrible, knock-off sequel. Also in the cast with Fraser and Bello is Luke Ford as the full-grown son of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz/Maria Bello s characters. The script by Smallville s Miles Millar and Alfred Gough follows the O Connell family to China where they fight the shape-shifting mummy of a former Chinese emperor played by Jet Li. Michelle Yeoh plays the wizard who cursed the emperor and turned him into an angry, mostly dead, bandaged freak. Up until now, I had been hopeful that the latest installment in The Mummy franchise would be able to pull off another good, if not great, movie with Mummy 3:P Curse of the Dragon. P My hopes were dashed with the news that studio has decided to recast the role of Evie O Connell. We already knew that, who played the role of Evie in the first two films, would not be joining the cast of Mummy 3 due to scheduling conflicts.
P I actually had no problem with this news. P I liked the idea of a father-son adventure. P What better way to extend the life of a franchise with an aging action hero than to give him a son that ll carry on the adventure? P In fact, I believe Indiana Jones is trying the same technique for its fourth installment. P Besides I liked what we saw of Alex O Connell in The Mummy Returns and am interested in how he grew up. A father-son adventure would allow the franchise to continue without Weisz. P Her absence could be explained early on and it would leave the door open for Weisz to return in a later movie. P If a female lead is needed, a love interest for Alex could always be added. P But apparently, no one at the studio is listening to me. P announced that Maria Bello will replace Weisz as Evie. I personally have nothing against.
P I liked her as the no-nonsense bar owner on Coyote Ugly and as Mel Gibson s girlfriend in Payback. P I even liked her short stint on ER as Dr. Anna Del Amico. P But you just don t replace an actress on a well-established franchise. P Fans will notice. P By doing so, the studio has already said that it s not out to make the best sequel that it can. With so many options available rewriting the script, casting another female lead in a different role, postponing the film until Weisz is available, the studio took the easy (and probably cheap) way out. P Fans of the Mummy franchise will definitely notice. P And this one is not happy about the decision. P This sequel has just move down to my wait until it comes out on DVD list. Bello joins a returning Brendan Fraser who will reprise his role as Rick O Connell and Luke Ford as their son Alex (despite my that Alex Pettyfer would have this role).
