why same sex marriage should not be legalized

1) Being gay is not natural. Real South Africans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning. 2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall. 3) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract. 4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal. 5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were
allowed; the sanctity of Britney Spears's 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed. 6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children. 7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children. 8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion.

In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only have one religion in South Africa. 9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children. 10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars or cellphones. For a start, at the beginning when the world was established, God created man and woman Adam and Eve; not Adam and Steve, or Mary and Eve. There is always the traditional teaching that a proper family consists of a male and a female, and not otherwise, two males or two females.

Also, the purpose of marriage is to produce children. How are two same-sex couples supposed to do this? It is impossible. The only way they can have children is through adoption. Then even if they have children, what are their children supposed to call them? A child from an early age is taught that they call their male parent dad, and their female parent mum. However, when they have same-sex parents, it is very confusing to them as they then cannot differentiate between mum and dad. Even when they grow up, they will not understand that boy-girl relationship is normal. In fact, a 2012 study by Mark Regnerus, associate professor of sociology at the University of Texas at Austin, found that children raised by parents who had same-sex relationships suffered more difficulties in life (including sexual abuse and unemployment in later life) than children raised by intact biological families.

For children s emotional well-being, they need both parents mum and dad in their life; and not just one of them. The father usually teaches their children what being a man is all about, especially for boys; for example, they need to be brave, daring and have to be the breadwinner of the family so as to be a role model for other family members. However, with same-sex marriage, such as the one promoted by Ms Yeung, this principle then cannot be embraced. Throughout the history of the human race, the institution of marriage has been understood as the complete spiritual and bodily communion of one man and one woman. Since the beginning, God taught that a man should leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife; and they should be one flesh (Genesis 2:24) and not otherwise. As same sex marriage is going against the basic nature of law, I really hope that this will not be legalised in Hong Kong. Eunice Li Dan-yue, Causeway Bay
