why do you close your eyes when kissing

Ever wondered why it is that when you lean in for a kiss, you're meant to close your eyes? Or
why it's considered such bad form to sneakily open your eyes mid-makeout? WELL, ON WITH THE KISSING. Because you don't have to wonder either of those things anymore. Because thanks to a study featured over on The Debrief, we now know where the whole 'eyes must be closed when kissing' thing actually comes from. Hurrah. You see, psychologists Polly Dalton and Sandra Murphy in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance.

Through that study, they discovered that it's really, really hard for our brain to focus on our other senses if we've got any visual stimuli to distract us. As a result, we need to close our eyes when we kiss so that we can actually enjoy how it feels physically. Dalton and Murphy discovered this by getting together some participants and asking them to do different letter-searching tasks. While they did this, a small vibration was applied to the participants' hands. The researchers found that when the participants were doing trickier letter-searching tasks, they didn't feel the vibrations as strongly - because their eyes were busier and their brains were focused on that.

So when we kiss, it's the same deal. It just won't feel as good with your eyes roaming about and getting distracted from the other sensations at hand. Plus, staring at the other person's closed eyes throughout is bloody creepy. Don't do that. Why do people close their eyes when they kiss? Who invented this custom? When you don t keep your eyes closed you re violating a sacred principle. It s like eating cereal with your hands when nobody s around.

Nobody sees you, but you still feel weird and like you re violating the natural order. If you need a reason to keep your eyes closed while kissing, here are seven top reasons, according to a poll taken outside Rockefeller Center by sexologist Diane DeLay, PhD, as part of the research for her upcoming book, Love Me Like We re Bunnies : You wouldn t want to see what you look like while kissing, so neither would your partner; Your brain can t make your tongue swirl around if your eyes are moving at the same time.

It s the same principle as trying to pat your head while using your other hand to go in circles over your belly; It s weird enough to kiss with your eyes open, but even weirder to make moaning sounds; For females, it ruins everything if you re fantasizing about Brad Pitt when you re staring at something closer to Steve Buscemi; For males, if you re kissing in the middle of intercourse, with your eyes closed it s easier to imagine baseball; With your eyes open, your lover s nose looks bigger than the Chrysler Building
