why does my dog keep being sick bile
Vomiting is not a condition, rather it's a symptom. Therefore, there isn't a direct, universal cure for all types of vomiting because the vomiting may have many causes. You will therefore need to have your vet run diagnostic tests if your dog is vomiting continuously, so the underlying cause can be addressed. Following are some possible causes for vomiting bile in dogs, obviously, you'll need to see your vet for an accurate diagnosis, so this list is not to be used for diagnostic purposes. Also, keep in mind that bile vomiting can take place any time a dog vomits on an empty stomach, or has vomited so much, the stomach has been emptied completely of food and now bile is being brought back up. Intestinal Blockage A will keep on vomiting for the simple fact that mechanically, food cannot make it past the blockage. Everything eaten therefore will be brought back up. At times, the vomiting can be forcefully expelled (explosive, projectile vomiting). Affected dogs may have repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dehydration, constipation. Pancreatitis As the term implies this is the inflammation of the dog's pancreas. This condition often occurs as a result of eating a high-fat meal such as bacon droppings or other oily and greasy foods. Affected dogs become very sick and develop severe vomiting, a painful belly and often an accompanying fever.
The symptoms often occur within 24 to 72 hours after ingesting the fatty meal. Affected dogs often require a course of antibiotics and prescription food. Inflammatory Bowel Disease At times, a chronic irritation of the dog's intestinal tract may trigger irritable bowel disease which may lead to bile vomiting. In this case, the solution may be as simple as switching to higher quality diet free of grains, fillers and by-products. Bilious Vomiting Syndrome In this case, the dog vomits bile because his stomach has been empty for too long. What happens is that on an empty stomach, the stomach secretes acids and mucus, and on top of that, bile is produced which flows into the small intestines. When the stomach is empty, there's nothing to absorb the stomach acids/bile which can be very irritating. Soon, the dog feels nauseated and a cycle of empty stomach-nausea-vomit-empty stomach-nausea-vomit is created. This cycle often takes place in dogs during the night when the stomach is empty for over 8 hours or in dogs who are fed one meal per day only, leaving the stomach empty for longer periods of time. The treatment consists of antiacids such as cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid) or ranitidine (Zantac). Feeding more frequent and smaller meals also helps.
A bed-time and early morning snack can also help break the cycle. Often, this condition is diagnosed once other causes for vomiting bile have been ruled out. And of course, the list doesn't end here. Bile vomiting may be also caused by a vast array of other problems such as the presence of toxins, liver disease, infectious diseases, liver problems, pesky parasites, abrupt dietary changes, allergies, stress and more. What dog owner hasnБt experienced that oh-so-special early morning wakeup call ofб stepping her footб in dog puke? If youБre like me, you first recoil in disgust but then inevitably end up on your hands and knees examining the offending puddle for clues as to. The vomit in question is often foamy or watery, and yellow in color. So, what does a dog vomiting yellow mean? Dogб vomiting yellow? HereБs why That yellow stuff is actually your dog vomiting bile. БBile is produced by the liver and aids in the digestive process,Б explains Tracey Jensen, DVM, Dipl. ABVP, medical director at in Wellington, Colorado. БBile is normal, but itБs not normal to vomit bile. The bile itself, if itБs produced excessively, can be a cause of vomiting. Б б Why is your dog vomiting bile? What is bilious vomiting syndrome? I asked Dr. Jensen about my own dog, Jцger, who occasionally vomits bile if he goes too long without eating.
It usually happens in the morning if I fed him dinner earlier than usual and forget to give him breakfast right away. I once Googled it and discovered the term bilious vomiting syndrome. In dogs, bilious vomiting syndrome is vomiting as a reaction to inflammation caused by bile in the stomach. Dogs with bilious vomiting syndrome tend to throw up in the morning after they havenБt eaten in a while. I wondered if that could be what causes my dogБs weird early-morning barfing. БItБs one of the things on a very long list of 1,001 reasons why a dog will vomit,Б Dr. Jensen says, Бand it certainly can be that a particular pet produces enough acid on an empty stomach that it will trigger vomiting. That is something that can be managed by a regular feeding schedule or even antacids. Б Now that I know that Jцger seems to do better with food in his stomach, I try to make sure I feed him his breakfast and dinner at the same time every day. If for some reason I have to feed his dinner early, IБll give him a biscuit right before bed and that usually does the trick. Is your dog throwing up yellow a cause for concern? One thing to knowб Бб your dog vomiting yellow may be a symptom of something serious. If your dog vomits, even occasionally, he should be seen by your vet to make sure itБs nothing that requires treatment.
БIt takes more of a trigger for a dog to vomit than most people,Б Dr. Jensen says. БIf a dog has started vomiting, usually thereБs something that triggered that and the possible causes for vomiting in dogs is quite an extensive list. Б Your vet will do a complete physical exam and might recommended certain tests to look for common causes of vomiting. According to Dr. Jensen, vomiting can be caused by certain parasites, various organ issues, hormonal disturbances and food sensitivity. Should you take your dog to the vet if he is puking yellow? It s hard to know when to bring your dog to the vet and when to take a wait-and-see approach. If there is a problem than needs to be addressed, waiting too long can lead to a more severe issue and could cost you more in the long run. БPets canБt speak,Б Dr. Jensen says. БAll we really have to go on are these physical symptoms. If something is occurring in your pet that has never happened before, pick up the phone and make a call. Even if itБs just a one-time thing. If nothing else, it will then get noted in your petБs file in case it does develop into a trend. Б Thumbnail: Photography by Shutterstock. Read more about dog vomiting issues on Dogster. com:
