why does my laptop say unidentified network
The steps below are just some steps you can take to help troubleshoot problems with your computer when you have one Windows 7 computer that cannot connect to the Internet and others that can connect with no issues. If you have multiple devices that won't connect these steps might not be right for you. P If you open your Network and Sharing Center and see the image below and the screen saysP
Unidentified Network and No Internet Access and you cannot connect to the Internet these steps are meant for you to try. P To troubleshoot this issue we have listed some steps below for you to try and see if they will fix your issue before you give us or your ISP a call. P Method 1 Disable any third party firewall programs. P Many antivirus programs now come with built in firewalls. PSo it is best to first try to disable those third party firewalls. To do this you can disable the service by going to Start, typing in MSCONFIG and then clicking on the Services tab. You will have to find the firewall program in the list and uncheck the box.
These third-party firewall programs can also slow down your connection because when you send a request to the internet that request has to go thru the third party firewall, then the windows firewall if it's turned on, then the firewall in your Actiontec Gateway. Same for the information that comes back in. P Method 2- Update Your Network Card Driver Actiontec Tech support cannot help you do this or recommend which driver to use. We do recommend that you contact the manufacturer of your PC for help completing this task. However, you can update your driver in one of two ways: either via Windows or by downloading the driver yourself manually from the manufactures website. Here are the instructions to update the driver via Windows. P Click on Start, type in devmgmt. msc, press Enter and then expand Network Controllers and right-click on the problem network card. Now click on the Driver tab and choose Update Drive r. If that doesnt work, you can also uninstall the network driver and then reinstall it after a restart.
This has also been known to fix the problem with some people. Note that Windows will automatically reinstall the default driver for you. In case it does not, you can always download the latest driver using another computer and then install it. Method 3 Restart Your Router and Modem This sounds like something easy to try but you can restart your Actiontec Gateway because you can waste a lot of time messing with your computer for no reason if its actually a problem with the router. Just make sure you just restart it not restore it to defaults. So DO NOT push the reset button on the back of the unit. P Method 4 Reset TCP/IP Stack Method 5 Use One Connection If you have both an Ethernet connection enabled and a wireless connection on your laptop or desktop, that could be the cause of the problem. You can either try disconnecting one, restarting and then seeing if you can get Internet access for each individually. You can go to Network and Sharing Center, click on Change Adapter Settings and then right-click on the network adapter and choose Disable.
Wait a few minutes and then re-enable the network connection that you previously disabled. P Method 6P Check Adapter Settings This solution is a little different for each user because not all PC's have the same network connections. But you need to go to Network and Sharing Center, click on Change Adapter Settings, then right-click on Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties. Youll see a box that says This connection uses the following items, which contains a list of protocols used by the network card to communicate. It should look something like this: Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), then select Properties. On the next box that appears make sure that the settings match the image below. Making sure both are set to obtain IP address and DNS server address automatically. PThe select ok. P If none of these troubleshooting steps work for you there might another issue with your PC or Actiontec gateway.
