It feels comforting to hear motivational speakers tell you how to achieve the goals to make your life prosperous. It is inspiring to read books and articles on how to overcome the challenges in life to achieve your desired goals. But, the key to achieving any goal is putting feet to your faith. I have read dozens of articles and blogs that preached the importance of goals. I have also read articles and blogs that downplayed the significance of goals. I agreed and disagreed with some of the commentary from both sides. I have concluded from reading about and talking to successful people in different walks of life that setting and achieving goals is an important piece of their success. Their goal process is not a one size fits all, but it is unique to their lifeБs vision. б
Goals are essential to your development and success. If goal setting is new to you, you tried them and it didnБt work or you need a reminder, here are 21 reasons why goals are important. Goals create a road map for success. Goals are the targets toward which you point your life. Goals give you a starting point and a destination to reach. Written goals help you to see where you are going, what changes you need to make and if you are progressing towards your prize. To achieve your life goals, you must make sacrifices, stay committed, overcome challenges and work your plans. You will find as you set goals that are focused on GodБs vision the more you will grow and accomplish. Goals help you focus your attention on your purpose and make it your dominant aspiration. When you have a definite target it positions you for real success. A specific goal does not take you around in circles; it puts you on a direct course of action. Goal achievement requires a committed, concentrated and consistent work ethic to make your dreams a reality.


The process of writing your goals helps you clarify what you desire to do, understand the importance of pursuing them and commit yourself to making them happen. Goals have value only if they help you develop and improve yourself or others potential. When you measure your goals progress, you stay on track, you see your target dates and experience the excitement of achievement that will propel you to reach your goals. The secret to achieving your goals is to get started. When you set actionable goals make sure they are in agreement with your overall vision. A goal worth pursuing is not something that anyone can easily talk you out of achieving. Defining your goals in writing impresses them upon your heart and mind. Goals are reached one step at a time. б When you commit yourself to your vision and express it in achievable goals, you provide yourself with the motivation of where you are going and how you anticipate getting there. Goals help you to determine priorities and direct you to focus on what is important. Setting goals in the seven areas of life (spiritual, physical, financial, relational, social, professional and mental) empowers you to live your vision with power. As Peter Drucker says: If you want to improve how you manage time stop doing what doesn t need to be done! 4 Peace of Mind Too often you can have many things on your mind. Writing down your goals can help you take all of those ideas, apply perspective and priority, then galvanize you into commitment and action 5 Clarity to Decision Making Knowing what you are trying to do means that you can now ask: does this activity get me closer to my goal? 6 Easier Measurement of What You Do Setting goals, especially SMART and SHARP goals, allows you to measure how well effectively you are moving towards achieving them 7 More Freedom of Thought Setting goals can help to release your creative energies so you can focus on how to achieve them. You ll start to look for ways to make it happen. 8 Easier Communication with Others Setting goals enables you to clarify with other people what you are trying to do, and therefore what they need to do to contribute or support.


Take some time now to think about what benefits you would gain from goal setting. How might they motivate you to start achieving them?
