why do we have bank holidays in may

Get Daily updates directly to your inbox Workers can once again look forward to two long weekends in May thanks to the UK bank holidays this year.

The spring season brings two bank holidays over and a further two in May, with these dates changing every year. Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are dependent on the lunar calendar, with Easter falling on Sunday, April 1 in 2018. The spring bank holidays always fall on the first and last Mondays of May, with the first known as May Day and the second named the Spring Bank Holiday. In 2018, May Day falls on Monday, May 7. May Day is typically celebrated with Morris Dancing, singing and feasts, as well as the crowning of the May Queen and dancing around the maypole. It is believes the day has roots in pagan Anglo-Saxon customs and the pagan festival Beltane, which marks the beginning of summer.

But where does maypole dancing come from? Maypole dancing is another tradition celebrated on May Day, and is seen as a way of saying farewell to winter. Even though summer does not begin until June, May Day is a celebration of things coming to life. Why do we have Bank Holidays? In 1871 the Bank Holidays act was introduced, which ensured four days of the year were seen as public holidays. These were Easter Monday, Whit Monday, the first Monday in August and Boxing Day. In 1890 the May Bank Holiday became associated with International Workers' Day as the Second International organised a day of protests in support of an eight-hour working day. May 1 was linked with protests after that, and became an official holiday in 1978.

When is the second May bank holiday and why do we have two in one month? The second bank holiday in May falls on the last Monday in May, which means it will be on Monday, May 28 in 2018. This bank holiday started as the Monday after Pentecost, otherwise known as Whitsun or Whit Monday. The Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 moved this bank holiday to the last Monday in May following a trial period of this arrangement from 1965 to 1970. The May Day bank holiday was nearly scrapped in 2011 when parliament debated the possibility of replacing it with one in October, but these plans did not materialise. That means we will continue to have two bank holidays in May for the foreseeable future. When are the bank holidays in 2018?
