why do we need to know god
Some feel that they have no need for God because they find many puzzling issues in life incompatible with belief in a loving God. For example, they may ask: БWhy do good people have to suffer? Б БWhy are some innocent babies born deformed? Б БWhy is life so unjust? Б Those are serious questions indeed, and finding satisfying answers to them can have a deep impact on our life. But instead of quickly blaming God for such problems, let us see how GodБs Word, the Bible, can shed light on this subject. In, we find the account of Satan, who, under the guise of a serpent, attempted to get the first human couple to go against Jehovah GodБs command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad. БYou positively will not die,Б Satan told Eve. БFor God knows that in the very day of your eating from it your eyes are bound to be opened and you are bound to be like God, knowing good and bad. Б
Б. By those words, Satan not only asserted that God is a liar but also implied that GodБs way of governing is unjust. The Devil contended that if mankind listened to him, things would work out better for them.
How could those issues be resolved? Jehovah chose to allow events to take their course in order to enable all to see whether the accusations leveled against him were true or false. God was in effect giving Satan and those who have taken his side the opportunity to demonstrate whether humans can live well without God. What do you judge to be the answer to SatanБs assertions? Can humans live well and govern themselves successfully without God? The suffering, injustice, sickness, and death as well as the crime, moral breakdown, wars, genocides, and other atrocities that have plagued mankind throughout the centuries are undeniable evidence that manБs attempts to govern himself independently of God have been a miserable failure. Rather than showing God to be responsible for mankindБs woes, the Bible points to a major cause of them: БMan has dominated man to his injury. Б Б. In light of this, is it not clear that we need to turn to God not only for answers to the troubling questions facing humans but also for the solution? What will God do? Hi Emma and thanks for your question. The fundamental difference between knowing about God and knowing God is about personal relationships.
Because God is a person, you can know about him but you don t really know him until you have a personal relationship with him. For instance I can know about the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, but I wouldn t say that I know him. To know him I have to meet him and get to know him. We have to reveal things to each other and be willing to share in each others lives. The staggering promise of the Bible is that we can know God like this and that He wants us to know him and share in his eternal life! I think one of the fundamental differences between Christianity and other religions is that we can know God as a person. How do we know that God is a person? Well, He came down to earth and became a man in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus didn t come just to heal and teach them how to be better people. He came primarily to reveal who (not what ) God is and how we can have a relationship with him. God is one eternal God, but he exists in the relationship of three persons - Father, Son and Spirit. These three persons existed in one God for all eternity. We tend to think of relationships as being between human beings.
But way before the creation of the world, relationship existed within God. This three-person relationship is what we call the Trinity. If you think this is pretty weird, so did the people who first followed him. They were Jews who always thought of God as one being, but Jesus did things that only God could do and revealed himself to be divine (read some of the gospels). He also claimed that he was the ONLY way to have a relationship with God the Father. He says, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). In fact the very reason that Jesus came to earth is because God wants to have a personal relationship with us. Jesus says, He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him. God wants all people to know him personally and he has sent His Son into the world so that we may truly know him. The only problem is, people don t naturally want to know God. We were created to know and love God and to submit to his good and loving rule over us. Unfortunately, from the very beginning we didn t like the idea of submitting to God s rule.
We wanted to rule ourselves without him, to run our lives how we thought best. We think God should be friends with us, but only as our equals. But God made us and the world, so he is the rightful ruler of it. Our response to God is what the Bible calls sin. But God will not let us treat him as less than God. One day we will be judged for the way we treat God. But the GREAT news is that Jesus came to reveal who God is, and to take our punishment for the way we ve treated God. When Jesus died on the cross, he took our death and allowed us to be forgiven and have a relationship with God. God and Jesus love us so much that they made this huge sacrifice in order to have a relationship with us. Now all we have to do is say yes to having a relationship with God. If you want to have a relationship with God, then just ask him. Read his word the Bible and ask a Christian friend to help you know where to start. You don t just have to know about God. You can KNOW God today! If you are interested you can read more about it at All the best, Clive. P. S. Sorry the reply is late.
