why do we have world water day

International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolutionP Pof 22 December 1992 by which 22 March of each year was declared World Day for Water, to be observed starting in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) contained in Chapter 18 (Fresh Water Resources) ofP. States were invited to devote the Day, as appropriate in the national context, to concrete activities such as the promotion of public awareness through the production and dissemination of documentaries and the organization of conferences, round tables, seminars and expositions related to the conservation and development of water resources and the implementation of the recommendations of Agenda 21.

Why a WorldPWaterPDay? World Water Day is an international observance and an opportunity to learn more about water related issues, be inspired to tell others and take action to make a difference. Each year, UN-Water Pthe entity that coordinates the UN s work on water and sanitation Psets a theme for World Water Day corresponding to a current or future challenge. The engagement campaign is coordinated by one or several of the UN-Water Members with a related mandate.
World Water Day в what does it mean to you? The annual event, on Wednesday, March 22, is a devastating reminder of one simple thing we take for granted в clean, safe water to drink, clean our things with and bathe in. The day is held to urge people to tackle the global water crisis. Itвs a reminder that 1. 8 billion peopleвs drinking water is contaminated with faeces. Dirty drinking water is truly horrifying в drinking itВ puts people at risk of contracting everything from cholera and dysentery to typhoid and polio.

What is World Water Day? World Water Day is part of a global mission to get safer water for all. Itвs a day for people to learn, get involved and take action. This is the 24th year, and itвs organised by UNВ WaterВ in collaboration with governments and partners. The United NationsВ organisation sets a theme each year. What are its origins? The UN decided back in 1992 there needed to be more global awareness on water issues. The United Nations General Assembly decided March 22, 1993, would be the first World Water Day, and it has been held annually since. One of the UNвs Sustainable Development Goals is to make sure everyone in the world has access to safe water by 2030. What is the theme for 2017? This year World Water Dayвs theme isВ wastewater. Whatвs that? Wastewater is water that has been used. This includes water from homes, businesses, industries and institutions.

The term covers everything from sewage and bathwater to washing up water. This yearвs campaign, вWhy waste water? в, is about reducing and reusing wastewater. How can I waste less water? 1. Turn off the tap while youвre brushing your teeth 2. Turn off the tap while washing up or scrubbing vegetables. 3. Put rubbish, oils, chemicals and food in the bin, not down the drain. The dirtier your wastewater, the more energy and money it costs to treat it. 4. Collect used water from your kitchen sink or bath and use it to water your plants 5. You cans also collect and use this water to wash your bike or car. How else can I get involved in World Water Day 2017? You can take part in Water Aid UKвs campaign to raise awareness and funds. Whether you decide to dye your hair blue, bake blue cakes to sell in the office or simplyВ use the hashtag #Blue4Water on social media to explain why youвre supporting the day, is up to you.
