why do we need to forgive others
1. PUnforgiveness stands between you and God. Why? Because we are all sinners, and through Grace God has forgiven us and sees us as righteous. If God can forgive us all the awful things we ve done, we can forgive others. For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. P
PBut if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. 2. PForgiveness is good for you. If you harbour unforgiveness you will be holding onto bitterness and thinking badly of others, sinning and opening a door to the enemy to get into your life and cause havoc. PDo not say, Ill do to them as they have done to me;P Ill pay them back for what they did. 3. Forgiveness is mainly for your benefit, not for the benefit of the person you are forgiving. As long as you are feeling like a victim, you are carrying a heavy burden. Forgiveness allows you to put the burden down. And simply walk away from it. Free. 4. Choosing not to forgive gets us stuck in our own past, preventing moving forward. Without forgiveness you are constantly stuck in your own past. Many people waste Pof their lives in bitterness and resentment when they could, through forgiveness, have lived that time in joy. 5. PForgiving helps us grow. Once you have forgiven anyone in your life you feel has harmed you,you suddenly find you have more time for thinking good productive and useful happy thoughts instead of negative and useless self-centred complaining. 6.
PForgiveness leads to healing. Holding onto resentment and not forgiving is sinful and seems to stand in the way of physical wellness. PJust google bitterness and cancer if you don t believe me. But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth toPforgivePsins. So he said to the paralyzed man, Get up, take your mat and go home. 7. PForgiveness is a free gift! Free to give and to receive. Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times? P PJesus answered,PI tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times P 8. Forgiveness leads to purification of the spirit. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and willPforgivePus our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 9. Being forgiving is empowering. Forgiving those who have done you wrong gives you the power back. It unbinds you from the effects of that transgression and opens the door to the Lord to deal with the situation. Now instead, you ought toP forgive Pand comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. God is just: He will pay backPtroublePto those whoPtroublePyou 10.
Jesus tells us to, He suffered and died and was resurrected so that we could have forgiveness. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone,PforgivePthem, so that your Father in heaven mayPforgivePyou your sins. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for thePforgivenessPof sins. I finished reading an incredible book over the weekend, by Suzanne Eller. I had first mentioned this book at the beginning of the summer on my (which, by the way, are books you could enjoy ANY time. ) I read the bulk of the book almost as soon as I received it- my eyes gobbled it up, in fact. But the last couple chapters were placed on pause while I focused on my family the last few weeks of summer and the first couple weeks of school. PI finally found a few minutes to finish up the book during my hair appointment on Friday. Yep, that s how we roll. And you know, the crazy thing is that just the evening before I finished it up, I lead a Bible study on by Lysa Terkeurst. We reviewed the first two chapters of the book and one of the discussion topics that seemed to hit home with each attendee was knowing how to discern God speaking to our hearts. How do we know an idea is not just our own thinking but is truly from God? And Lysa mentions that one of the ways we know it is God is when we receive the same message over and over again through various avenues.
Perhaps a verbal discussion will come up on the topic with friends. Or you ll see an article on that very issue. God uses people to confirm His messages to us. So I finished reading The Unburdened Heart- Finding the Freedom of Forgiveness- on Friday and today, a portion of my pastor s sermon mentioned forgiveness. He talked about how saying you are sorry is ok in trivial matters, but heart issues beg for the words: Will you forgive me? I wrote all of the above so that you would see the back story to this post. Because sometimes you have to ask people to forgive you when you did nothing wrong. Through their perspective, you have harmed their spirit, though you intended no harm. And so it is that you have to forgive someone else for needing your apology and your request for forgiveness, though you did nothing intentional. So why do we need to forgive others? 1. We need to forgive others because we need it ourselves. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, Matt. 6:14 2. We need to forgive others in order to free ourselves. Susie takes an entire chapter of The Unburdened Heart to explain the freedom of forgiving others and all that it empowers us to do.
We then are released to hear God s voice, have a future and pour into others. 3. We need to forgive others in order to get over little things that don t matter. Pretty much the exact words of my pastor today in his sermon. Only I seriously doubt if he has read Susie s book, which says the same thing. With my daughter, Taylor s, terminal disease of MPS, there is no cure or even treatment. At the end of the day, when I reflect back on all the little things I sometimes allow to bother me, I shake my head at my own self, realizing what truly matters. For me personally, the practice of forgiving others gives me the freedom to live to the fullest each day, recognizing that holding grudges only dampers the beauty of everyday life. Holding grudges in everyday living only dampers the beauty of eternity. Looking towards God s plan for our future becomes blurry when we are harboring an unforgiving heart. I can t say enough about Susie s book. I know it is one I will recommend over and over again- so if you haven t read it yet, don t miss out! You can get a copy. And if you want to hear the stellar sermon I heard this morning, you can do that. Choose Keeping the Peace. How do you feel about forgiving others?
