why do we have to pray 5 times a day

By: Ahmed Rehab Why Do We Pray 5 Times a Day? For many reasons, but one simple reason is this: prayer is the sump pump to our sins. Since the sins are invariably guaranteed to keep coming, so must the sump pumps keep working. Groundwater is a consequence of rain, and sin is a consequence of life. Regulated sump pumps protect, and so does regular prayer. Allah states that when you perform your prayer, it erases all sins accumulated since your last prayer. Kind of like how the sump pump eliminates the dirty water, your sins are erased. Our first precaution against sin is to try our best to shelter ourselves from it, no doubt. My home s first line of defense against rain damaging its valuable contents is the roof and walls that provide shelter. I could not have a roof-less, wall-less house and then expect the sump pumps to keep my home nice and dry. That s just basic logic. I need both strategies. But since even the best of roofs and the sturdiest of walls won t change the laws of physics, I need the sump pumps if I wish to avoid groundwater accumulating and flooding my foundations. Regular prayer, which contains
istighfar (or repentance) pumps out that harmful, unavoidable seepage which, if left to its own devices, will trickle slowly but surely into a flood that will, in time, leave you struggling to breathe under water. Life, like rain, is good. You can t and shouldn t turn against it. How else will the grass grow? But like rain, life comes with liabilities. It can sustain and purify you, and it can leave you breathing mold toxins, or even drown you.

The difference is whether you control it, or you do nothing Б and thus be controlled by it. Sin is the tax of life much like groundwater is the tax of rain. It can threaten your spiritual foundation if left unchecked much like groundwater can threaten your home s foundation. Your nafs (soul) is the lowest point, the basement. It needs to come armed with prayer, with sump pumps. Sump pumps must work at regular intervals in order to guarantee a dry basement. Once a week won t cut it. б Why do you pray at night, they might ask? Well, why do sump pumps work at night? Why do you pray at dawn? Well, why do sump pumps work at dawn? Is my nafs less valuable Б less worthy of protection Б than my basement? Sometimes when it rains, it pours. At such times of higher risk, sump pumps are triggered to work extra hard to keep up with the need. And so, while we have the regular prayers 5 times a day, we also have the nawafel, or voluntary prayers, as a tool for us to trigger as needed. But remember, you can have sump pumps, and still get flooded Б as I did. Until you realize that low horsepower plastic sump pumps offer a false sense of protection. Such is the case with distracted, mindless prayer that might as well be aerobics. Make sure your sump pumps are cast iron and of a high horsepower: that is, keep your prayers sincere, focused, meditative, and contemplative. Stay dry my friends. БRecite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater.

And Allah knows that which you do. Б ( Source: muslimmatters. org. According to Prophet Muhammad, the only thing that separates Muslims from non-believers is the prayers. It is the second pillar of Islam after the declaration of faith. Islam is based on five pillars and if one is missing then the whole building collapses. There is no other religion which instructs its followers to pray five times a day therefore Salah is the identity of Muslims. Muslims are ordered to pray five times a day at specific times; before sunrise, midafternoon, late afternoon, sunset and at night. Both the Quran and the Hadith of the Prophet strongly emphasizes the vitality of the five daily prayers in Islam. Salah is a way of totally submitting to the wills of Allah and showing gratitude to him because as Muslims, we donБt bow before anyone but Allah the Almighty. Allah the Almighty said the closest my slave gets to me is during prostration. The essence of the five daily prayers in Islam cannot be underestimated. How can someone who takes bath five times a day become dirty? The same applies to the five daily prayers; it cleanses and purifies the soul of a Muslim. Salah softens the heart of a Muslim and it naturally prevents you from committing sins because it teaches and disciplines you to be humble and also reminds you of the existence of a supreme being. There is nothing tedious about Salah because it can be done in five minutes or less. What is difficult about taking thirty minutes out of twenty four hours a day to talk to the supreme creator?

Salah should be consistent and unconditional. As Muslims we donБt pray sometimes, and anytime, we pray every single day at the right time. When we are happy we pray; when we are sad and inflicted with tragedy we pray. This is the only way to connect with the maker of the universe and everything in it. One of the companions of the Messenger said БMy friend Prophet Muhammad gave me the following advice. Even if you are chopped up and burnt, do not associate partners with Allah and do not miss your obligatory prayers deliberately. Allah will move His protection away from a person who misses his obligatory prayers deliberately. Б Prophet Muhammad said, if you cannot pray while standing, then pray sitting down. If you cannot pray while sitting down then pray while lying down; if you cannot then pray with your eyes for it is better than not praying at all. If the messenger of Allah, a man who was guaranteed paradise could pray an entire night until his feet got swollen then why should we not pray? Why are we too busy chasing the worldly benefits by neglecting our prayers, forgetting we have a grave to go to? б What success are we looking for when the success and peace we are seeking in this world is in the five daily prayers? When a Muslim dies without going to hajj, your family can do that on your behalf; similarly they can give zakat on your behalf as well as complete the fasting for you if you die in the Ramadan. But for Salah, no one can do that for you. There is beauty in Salah and it will take a beautiful Muslim to experience that beauty.
