Seems a strange question to ask because we all know we should be healthy but do we ever stop to analyse the reasons why it is important. In our last blog post we looked at how people can create sustained engagement in health. Longer life the wish of having a long and enjoyable life might simply be enough for an individual to make smarter lifestyle choices earlier in life. These reasons are only a selection of some of the motivations but they are examples of the context within which people think about their health. In terms of how technology can have the most effective influence on helping to improve people s health, technology must appeal to these human reasons why people want to get healthy and not try to push notional reasons onto people. One of the most high profile health technology failures has been Google Health. The reasons cited for why it failed was partly because of a lack of explanation as to the benefits of online personal health records. The message wasn t clear as to ultimately why the technology could help individuals manage their health. Contrasting the failure of Google Health is the success of the Fitbit. The reason Fitbit has gained so much traction is because it is an unobtrusive device which tracks the aspects of people s health that they want to track. It is easy to understand how it works and it is a very slick and subtle device. Therefore technology can have a positive influence on health management but the question providers must ask is not about convincing consumers of a notional benefit that they should work towards, but instead have a greater emphasis on designing technology which will appeal to the reasons consumers will want to get healthy. So make that decision today as every day you put it off could possibly take one year off your life.
