why do we bleed when we cut ourselves

Make sure to. This subreddit is for asking for objective explanations. It is not a repository for any question you may have. E is for Explain - merely answering a question is not enough. LI5 means friendly, simplified and layman-accessible explanations - not responses aimed at literal five-year-olds. Perform a keyword search, you may find good explanations in past threads. You should also consider looking for your question in the FAQ. Don t post to argue a point of view.

Your body is filled with a closed circulatory system. A closed circulatory system means that our blood runs in something called vessels. There are blood vessels everywhere in our body. Some are so small, that we can only see them with very powerful microscopes.

When we get cut, we break hundreds of thousands of small, microscopic blood vessels, and in some cases, some major ones. Because these vessels are cut, and blood is actively moving because of being pumped by the heart, blood will come out of the cut. We can actually die from this. It is called fatal extensive bleeding, but in English, it is called bleeding to death.

What is amazing, is that this can happen both outside of our body, meaning blood will come out of our body, or it could happen inside. This is called internal bleeding. When we get a bruise, what it really is, is blood. Yes, we can bleed in our body. And if it is to much, we can bleed to death in internal bleeding. The body is an amazing thing, but it does have it s flaws. And bleeding is one of them. That is why it is so important to know what bleeding is, and where it comes from.

We can stop external bleeding, by applying pressure to the wound. With internal bleeding however, that is hard to help. If you ever experience massive bleeding, whether internal or external, call an ambulance, because it can be fatal. However, our body has ways of trying to control it. It is called coagulation, or blood clotting. If we didn t have this, we would all be dead by now.
