why do puppies have worms when they are born
The below information is what I send home with every puppy that leaves us, I put it together after researching that very question! Enjoy! Sorry it is in all Caps. INTERNAL PARASITES BETTER KNOWN AS вWORMSв, CAN BE VERY SERIOUS IF NOT TAKEN SERIOUS BY YOU AND YOUR VETERINARIAN. IF LEFT UNTREATED, THESE PARASITES CAN EVEN TAKE THE LIFE OF YOUR PUPPY. SO PLEASE CONTINUE TO READ TO UNDERSTAND WHY AND HOW TO TREAT YOUR PUPPY. THESE PARASITES HAVE вLIFE STAGESв, WHICH BASICALLY CONSIST OF EGG, LARVAE, ADULT. ONCE THE EGG HATCH AND DEVELOP INTO LARVAE THEY MIGRATE INTO THE TISSUES OF THE BODY. WHEN A PUPPY IS EXPOSED AND HAS BEEN GIVEN THESE PARASITES THEY CAN MIGRATE WITHIN THE SKIN, MUSCLE, AND LUNG TISSUEвS, BEFORE DEVELOPING INTO THE ADULT STAGE IN THE INTESTINAL SYSTEM. A SMALL PORTION OF THE MIGRATING LARVA WILL BECOME ENCYSTED (ENCLOSED IN A SAC OR CYST) WITHIN THE MUSCLE, AND LIE DORMANT, ESSENTIALLY вLAYING IN WAITв FOR MONTHS EVEN YEARS BEFORE RESUMING DEVELOPMENT. THIS PUPPY IS DEWORMED THROUGH OUT PUPPYHOOD AND EVEN PUT ON PREVENTION. SO WHY DOES THIS PUPPY THEN GROW UP AND EXPOSE вHERв YOUNG TO THE PARASITE? DURING PREGNANCY AND WHELPING, THE ENCYSTED LARVAE IN THE DAM (MOTHER DOG) ARE STIMULATED BY HORMONES TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP FROM THEIR EXISTING STATE. THIS STAGE OF THE PARASITE AS WELL AS THE EGGS OF THE PARASITE CAN PASS THROUGH THE MAMMARY GLANDS TO INFEST THE INFANT PUPS WHEN NURSING. IN SOME CASES PUPPIES ARE BORN WITH THEM AS THE PARASITE CAN ALSO PASS THROUGH THE PLACENTA AND INFEST THE UNBORN PUPPY. SO THE CYCLE IS A CYCLE THAT CAN BE KEPT UNDER CONTROL, WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR PUPPY TO THE VET AND HAVE THEM TO DO A FECAL EXAM TO CHECK FOR PARASITES. IF THE TEST IS POSITIVE, HAVE THEM DEWORM THE PUPPY. WHILE AT THE VET HAVE THEM PRESCRIBE HEART WORM PREVENTATIVE WITH EXTRA PARASITE CONTROL (INTERCEPTOR, HEARTGARD PLUS, ETC) THIS WILL KEEP THE PUPPY FROM REINFESTING THEMSELVES. HERE AT OUR KENNEL, WE USE STRONGID-T ON OUR INFANT PUPPIES AND OUR ADULT FEMALES THAT ARE IN WHELP (PREGNANT) AS IT IS THE SAFEST DEWORMING PRODUCT ON THE MARKET AND IS WHAT YOUR VET USES. THIS DEWORMING MEDICATION RIDS THE PUPPIES OF ADULT вWORMSв, HOWEVER THE SAFE PUPPY DEWORMER DOES NOT RID THEM OF THE EGGS, OR LARVAE. THIS IS WHY YOU AND YOUR VETERINARIAN MUST KEEP THE CYCLE UNDER CONTROL BY CONTINUING TO DEWORM, AND DURING THEIR VERY FIRST VISIT TO YOUR VETERINARIAN TELL THEM YOU WANT YOUR PUPPY STARTED ON HEARTWORM PREVENTION NOW. THE HEARTWORM PREVENTION HAS AN ADDED INGREDIENT TO BREAK THE CYCLE AND CAN NOW BE STARTED AS YOUNG AS 8 WKS OLD. Pups can get worms from the ground, other pups around, dirty living areas.
You deworm them by liquid meds, every 2 weeks.
Pups can get roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and i think theres a four worm but i don't know the name of it. Tapworms: Tapeworms require what is called an intermediate hot to complete their life cycle. The tapeworm most commonly infecting pets must have its egg eaten by a flea and the flea must be eaten by a dog or cat in order for the tapeworm to develop into a animal.
Hookworms: These worms live hooked into the wall of the intestines of dogs and cats. The female hookworm produces eggs, which pass out in the animals stool and develop into larvae in one week. Roundworms: These worms are the most commonly occurring worms in dogs and cats. They live free in the intestines of the animal. Because puppies and kittens can become infected while still in the uterus, most are born with roundworms. It takes roundworm eggs two weeks to become infective once passed in stool and eggs can survive in soil for several months. Puppies, kittens, and nursing females are the largest reservoir of environmental contamination and should be routinely treated. Right before our female has her pups, we deworm here. And after the pups turn 2 weeks we deworm the mom everytime. Example. every 2 weeks with the pups until the pups live for there new home.
