why do nurses wear scrubs in public

Being Бold school,Б I donБt like to see people wearing scrubs outside of the hospital. But there is no evidence that bacteria on scrubs spread disease, and a large number of ancillary hospital personnel wear scrubs. Every few months when things are slow, someone publishes an article about the imaginary dangers associated with doctors wearing scrubs in public. A recent version is from. An associate editor saw some people in scrubs having lunch in a restaurant and was, of course, horrified. She questioned the magazineБs medical editor, Dr. James Hamblin, whose response was remarkably reasoned (until the end). He pointed out that it might not have been doctors because everyone, including secretaries (and even custodial people in my hospital), now wears scrubs to work. Dr. Hamblin rightly added that there is a lot of debate about the issue. He speculated that some guys wear scrubs in public as a signal to women that they are doctors. But at the end of the piece, he said it was OK if his colleague were to Бtell offБ the people she saw eating lunch in scrubs.

Since IБve been married for 38 years, I donБt need to wear scrubs in public to attract women. Anyway, they tend to flock to me even when IБm dressed in civilian clothing. Being Бold school,Б I donБt like to see people wearing scrubs outside the hospital. I just think it sends the wrong message Б and what s worse, it continues to provoke folks into writing letters, blogs, and newspaper and magazine columns full of indignation. However, I canБt get worked up about this, and hereБs why: Yes, bacteria can be found on scrubs. But one has to wear something to work, and whatever one wears can occasionally become contaminated. After all, it
is a hospital. There is no evidence that bacteria on scrubs spread disease. Nor is there evidence that bacteria on other objects such as ties, white coats, cell phones, stethoscopes, computer keyboards, or numerous other articles shown to be contaminated has made people sick. In addition to the large number of ancillary hospital personnel who wear scrubs, here are some others: my dentist and his staff, including his secretary and his hygienists, and my dogБs veterinarian, his secretaries and the guy who holds my terrified dog.

I donБt see a simple solution to this problem. Scrubs are sold in stores. Anyone can buy them. They come in all colors. A nurse at my hospital wears a set of desert camouflage scrubs with a matching backpack. I donБt know how to tell him that the desert camo doesnБt work. ItБs easy to spot him as he stands out rather clearly amid the solid colors of the unitБs walls and the white sheets on the beds. He would blend in better if he could find a set of Бhospital beigeБ colored scrubs. I would also suggest that telling people off is 1) rude and 2) possibly hazardous to your health. You never know what that person youБre telling off might do when confronted. What do you think about wearing scrubs outside the hospital? Skeptical Scalpel is a retired surgeon and was a surgical department chairman and residency program director for many years. For the last six years, he has been blogging at and tweeting as. His blog has had more than 2,500,000 page views, and he has over 15,500 followers on Twitter. When did hospital scrubs become a fashion statement? While visiting Boston s hospital district and taking public transport, there were SO many people in scrubs, some with the accessory of a stethescope. I ve been a nurse for 33 years, outside the USA. ( I trained in USA). We go to work in our clothing and we change into our uniforms when we get there. We never wear shoes from outside inside the unit or department. The hospitals supply uniforms for every single employee regardless of department, and the uniforms are launderd by the hospital. There s always the accommodation to shower after our work, and we often do. (on the burn unit we shower and dress anew after every patient we care for). We never see nurses in uniforms outside the perimeter of the hospital. How have infectious disease clinicians not brought an end to wearing uniforms outside of work all over the USA? I mean it I shudder when I see a maroon scrub suit in the Stop n Shop.

My sister was very ill in a Boston hospital. Nurses were of high caliber, masters levels specialists who put laundry on the floor, or picked it up and let it touch all over their scrubs the same scrubs they would wear home. We ll never know if my sis could have pulled through (she had youth on her side) because the last insult was MRSA. MRSA in the ICU. Apparently the docs didn t find that unacceptable. I sure did. We had MRSA in the burn unit where I worked which shut down completely. Patients were sent to other burn centers in country, and 4 went to burn centers in neighboring countries. The unit shut. Hundreds of cultures done and everything cleaned. Sources were found one IVAC pump and one cardiac monitor. The unit opened after 6 days. One of my sister s doctors said,. you could close your unit because you have socialised medicine. If we don t keep our beds full, we don t receive any revenue ahhhhh.
