why do stretch marks itch after pregnancy

When your skin dries out, the skin over stretch marks might become itchy. Topical treatments such as moisturizing lotions and creams can be a great reliever of stress marks. Some recommend coconut butter, olive oil and almond oil to soothe stretch marks. While those can help, keeping your whole body hydrated is the most effective way to ensure your skin stays hydrated. In general, people need about eight glasses of water, but much of the water a person needs is consumed through food and other beverages, which also counts into that essential total.
If you have small, raised, red and itchy areas on your, you may have something called polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (PEP).

It s a harmless condition, but the itching can be uncomfortable. PEP often starts in late pregnancy, but it can also happen just after the birth. The itching often starts in your stretch marks, or on your stomach, but it can also spread to other areas, such as your thighs, back, breasts and arms. Raised areas, as if you ve been stung by nettles (wheals). Small, red, raised lumps (papules). Larger areas of inflamed skin (plaques). Small blisters that leak fluid if you scratch them, and then crust over. The rash is usually enough for a skin specialist to make a diagnosis. If there is any uncertainty, a skin sample and blood test can be taken.

Experts don t know what causes PEP. However, it s more likely to affect you if your skin has had to stretch a lot, perhaps because you re, or if it s your first baby. The itching usually settles down, but it may not stop completely until near the end of your pregnancy, or a few days or weeks after you ve given birth. Although PEP isn t harmful, see your doctor, so she can rule out other sorts of that may need treatment. Try having cool baths with an emollient added to the water, and use emollient creams and ointments afterwards. Wearing cotton clothes may also help to avoid irritation to your skin. If the itching and redness is intense, your doctor may prescribe a steroid cream or antihistamine.

One type of antihistamine, chlorphenamine (Piriton), has the side-effect of making you drowsy, which may help you to if the itching is keeping you awake. Oral steroids may be used as a last resort. Having PEP shouldn t affect your, though if the condition is severe, some women choose to have their. If you re using topical or oral steroids, you can safely after your baby is born, as only a tiny amount would be present in your breastmilk. However, if you ve put the steroid cream on your nipples and the surrounding area, you ll need to wash it off before feeding.
