why do pentecostal women have long hair
Apostolic Pentecostals teach that women should not cut their hair. They base this teaching on a literal interpretation of 1 Corinthians 11:1-16, which includes admonitions such as "every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head" and "if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. " Pentecostal churches which do not require women to wear long hair generally interpret these portions of the Bible as referring to a specific cultural issue in the Corinthian church during the time the New Testament was written. Adult Apostolic Pentecostal women often wear their hair up in a bun, but there is no requirement to do so.
Are there any on here? Because I've got questions! A handful of my close family and friends are apostolic pentecostals and I've tried debating with them, but there was no reasoning.
I've tried to understand their thinking process in some of the things they believe and do, but it just doesn't seem logical to me. For starters, I have a hang up with the hair. My husband has 6 cousins who are pentecostal and have hair down to their rear ends. I know the Bible says a woman's hair is her crowning glory, and I have a different interpretation of what that means. I was under the impression that at the time, prostitutes were known by their shaven heads. That scripture was basically saying a shaven head was shameful (for what it meant at the time) and that for a women to have hair was something to cherish. If you truly believe that long hair is your glory, then should you atleast trim off the split ends? I mean, you get trims to keep your hair healthy. Then, I want to know about the whole skirt thing.
I like skirts. I have no problem with wearing skirts and being girly. I know the Bible says not to dress as a man (or something along those lines), but I think that means don't dress in drag, be happy and celebrate that you're a woman. I don't know about everyone else, but I buy my pants in the womens section. Then, whats up with the long sleeves? I have a few really close friends who do not wear short sleeves anymore. They wear long sleeves even in the Oklahoma 100+ degrees summer days. I don't understand that. I once saw one of them fanning themselves with a brochure that said, "Holiness is Hot! " with little lines all around it, making it look the words were giving off heat. To each their own, but no one's elbow has ever turned me on! And what about the men? I've been told first hand that they have to have clean shaven faces every day and their hair can't touch their shirt collar.
Do you really think Jesus shaved every morning and kept a nicely trimmed crew cut? I don't understand. Lastly, can you explain the problem with makeup and jewelry? I know the Bible mentions not to adorn yourself with jewels and I assume there's a scripture that says something similar about makeup. But I always understood that to mean not to draw attention to your self or to be so concerned about appearances. One of my friends even mentioned how makeup and jewelry were a distraction. Well, the big pento hairdo is a distraction to me. I've seen feathers, pearls and flowers sticking out of those beehives and yes sometimes it's pretty. But I often found myself staring at their head instead of listening to the preacher.
In case you couldn't tell, I have a bit of a 'beef' with pentecostals. Maybe it's because I don't understand them, I don't know. But I've been to pentecostal churches many times (I dated one) so I'm familiar with their style. I'm not crazy about that style of preaching each and every time I go to church, but I do think there can be a time and place for it. And for the most part we believe the same things. I just have such a huge problem with how obsessed they seem about appearances. I mean, doesn't God care more about what's on the inside than the outside? Am I missing something? I'm up for a debate, someone. please challenge me! I wanted to add that I am a Christian myself and I'll be the first one to admit that I don't read my Bible like I should. So that's why I didn't reference specific scriptures.
